She holds a PhD from the European University Institute in Florence and an MA from Free University of Berlin. Her research focuses on European foreign and security policy, arms control and international sanctions. Her work received the 2011 THESEUS Award for Promising Research on European Integration. Prior to her appointment at EUISS, Clara Portela worked as a professor at Singapore Management University.
