These past few days, all eyes were on President Macron’s Washington visit, in what was seen as a festive tribute to America’s oldest ally. But below the surface, repair work is needed. EU leaders are starting to express frustration with the US. Much of the EU-US friction is down to three letters: IRA. We make sense of the visit by placing it in the broader context of transatlantic ties. On the other side of the Atlantic, the European Commission approved a proposal for the adoption of an anti-coercion instrument, allowing the EU to better respond to coercive threats. Despite consensus for this legislation, opinions are divided on countermeasures. Still in Europe, we consider why the bloc failed to become a true techno-power, as tech weakness permeates sectors. Last but not least: Ukraine. The war officially entered its 10 month. We hear from Ukraine directly and assess what to make of a top US general’s comments on an opening window for peace talks.
